Motorcycle Care: From Cruisers to Crotch Rockets

Whether you’re somewhere on a desert highway driving a Harley-Davidson or flying around the back roads on a Honda CBR model, a little bit of zen and some motorcycle maintenance can often mean the difference between making the curb or not. You only have to land on your back in the middle of a grassy field once to appreciate just how important this difference can actually be.

Obviously, your cleaning requirements will vary depending on how many miles you log and what the road conditions are like when you’re racking them up. Regardless, it’s not a good idea to get your motorcycle washed and cleaned at a commercial car wash. So, unless you’re independently wealthy and can afford to have your bike hand-washed by a bunch of bikini-clad supermodels, you’re going to end up doing it yourself (probably just as well… supermodels aren’t really known for their attention to detail). Here are some recommendations for keeping your bike in top condition.

Before beginning, always consult your owner’s manual. If you don’t have it or bought the bike used, try to track one down on the internet (most manufacturers will offer them as a free PDF download via their respective websites). A motorcycle owner’s manual will contain specific instructions for washing, including cleaning tips and products recommended by the manufacturer.

Always make sure the engine has cooled before washing. Wash your bike in a shaded area as the sun can dry the soap solution before you can rinse it, leaving soap marks on the surface (which more or less defeats the point of washing it in the first place). When you’re scrubbing off the road grime, give all the parts a thorough check. Be on the lookout for leaks and loose hardware, making sure everything is snug and secure.

After thoroughly rinsing, dry your bike with a soft white cotton cloth or towel that doesn’t have loose fibers. Cheap towels leave behind loose fibers that show up like cat hair on a business suit. Also, avoid using a paper towel as it might scratch the painted surfaces. Taking a cue from the commercial car washes, compressed air is a great option for drying and works especially well in hard to reach places, like around the motorcycle license plate frame. If you don’t have an air compressor, you can use a vacuum in a similar way by attaching the hose to the exhaust port, although a modest investment in a motorcycle dryer will pay off with just a few uses. Follow the cleaning process with a good coating of car wax to protect the finish and block dirt from taking hold as easily.

For those who have a collectable model or just don’t have the time to get on the roads as often as they’d like, there are a number of handy accessories – like a motorbike cover or motorcycle loading ramp – that protect your bike and prevent you from having to wash it as often.

Motorcycle covers provide a high-quality way to shield your bike from the elements and other airborne corrosives like dust. Don’t use a plastic tarp. They trap moisture and don’t breathe, allowing mold and corrosion to take hold. Motorbike covers also protect against UV rays, rain, dirt and pollutants while the built-in air vents let moisture evaporate.

Another handy accessory, Motorcycle ramps, features a strong weight capacity, wheel-guider sides, and sure-grip ramp surfaces, providing traction, stability and safety when transporting your bike from one location to another or onto a raised or lowered platform.

Storing your bike requires a little extra care. First, bring the tire pressure for both the front and rear up to the recommended PSI. Next, find an out-of-the-way spot to store it, and put the bike up on its center-stand. Then, block it up just enough to raise the front wheel off the ground and either remove the battery or hook it up to a trickle charger, maintaining the charge and health of the battery while not in active use.

1) Yes, they are out to get you – no matter what the guy selling the bike
may say, there’s a good reason he or she is disposing of the bike you’re
buying. Granted, we can assume that there are honest bike owners out
there selling their old hogs because they got a newer model, or need the
money for something else, or just got tired of the hobby. But for every
one honest biker, you can expect ten or more who are getting rid of
something that is on the point of breakdown or, even worse, fencing
stolen goods. Paranoia is actually a good thing in buying used bikes.

If, in the early days of your working life you are unlucky enough to find
yourself jobless through either, takeovers, cutbacks or closures, a full
Driving License will enable you to pick up an interim job very quickly while
you regroup and examine your future options.

Since it was introduced back in 2002, Honda Insight’s 1.0-liter three-
cylinder gasoline engine and Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) motor-
generator have been modified, and the CVT model’s final drive ratio is
considerably lower, at 5.69:1 compared to 3.21 for the manual, to take
advantage of the CVT’s wider-spread “gear” ratios.

A dark brown or black oily fluid means the engine is leaking oil. A bad seal
or gasket could cause the leak. This is how my first car met its demise.

2) LOOK at the bike personally – if you can’t personally come over and
view the goods before purchase, forget it. If the seller lives too far away
from you to do a pre purchase inspection, forget about it. If you don’t
know anything about motorcycle mechanics and can’t bring along a friend
who does when you inspect the bike, forget about it. Look at the bike
before buying it and make usre that it’s in excellent running condition and
won’t be a lemon that will break down at the most inopportune moment
- like when you’re doing 80 miles an hour on the freeway…

3) Do your research – if you don’t know anything about bikes, go online
and check out motorcycle forums as well as the manufacturer’s website of
the bike you’re eyeballing. Make sure that the model you’re considering is
one known for durability, and also that dealers have a good parts supply
handy in case you need to do alittle bit of work getting your used bike up
to specs.

4) Ask for Help – don’t be shy to ask for advice from people who know
the biz. Bike forums will sometimes have specialists on the sites who give
advice for newbies. If you have any doubts or concerns, air them out
before making a purchase and get any points you may be a little shaky on
clarified. If you have a buddy who knows more about bikes than you, ask
him for help locating a good used bike. Just make sure, of course, that he
isn’t the type of “buddy” who’ll snow you for a percentage…

Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R Crotch Rocket – Sport Bike – Motorcycle – Review

The Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R motorcycle is a top-of-the-line crotch rocket. As one of the most popular crotch rockets or sport bikes in the motorcycle category it is probably most well known for its speed. It came into this world in 1999 and with ongoing testing it was the fastest production motorcycle in the world.

It enjoyed an excellent reputation among sport bikes however in 2000 the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers decided that they would have to change some of the specs. They were worried about the regulation that was bound to happen among various governments and they didn’t want to have any problems.

So in 2001 and the following years through 2008, they added what is called a timing retard to the fifth gear and a rev limiter. This changed the maximum speed to 186 mph from the 198mph that was enjoyed on the earlier model.

It has six gears however most will keep it in third pretty much for tooling around town and up to 60 mph on the local tracks.

The Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R has a cool 3-way switch on the right handle bar. Choices are – one for full power and response and the other two switches reduce action and output.

And of course – it’s a crotch rocket so you’re going to be sitting close to the ground. It sits a little lower than some other models and the bars are not as narrow. But most crotch rocket lovers like this.

The translation of Hayabusa from the Japanese language is peregrine falcon. Thee peregrine falcon can travel faster than 200 mph. This Suzuki motorcycle certainly meets that definition.

In 2008 the crotch rockets or sport bike competition soared when the BMW K120S and the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R were brought to the marketplace.

Suzuki is no longer called the GSX1300R in some countries because Suzuki dropped it and they call it simply the Hayabusa.

The Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R can go a quarter mile in 9.62 seconds at 149 mph. It can go from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds and from 0-180 in 15.9 seconds.

The 2009 models come in white and silver, black and gray, black and gold and silver and gray. In 2008 the Hayabusa sold for ,000 or so. Although now, individual deals can be made with local dealers. And if you’re lucky enough to find a used Hayabusa that’s not all beat up, that’s good too and can save you a lot of money.

So if you’re thinking about buying a Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R sportbike you’ll get a high performance motorcycle – sport bike or crotch rocket that you’ll be proud to own, do endless motorcycle stunts and wheelies and love to ride! But don’t buy this crotch rocket – motorcycle as your first bike. Repairs can be expensive and one spill can end up causing a lot of damage. Get a used older bike and practice on that unless you’re an experienced rider now.
